School offers support after student stabbed at Far North Queensland school

A young woman is fighting for her life after she was allegedly stabbed by a fellow student at their high school.
An 18-year-old man has been taken into custody, while the 18-year-old woman was rushed from the school to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition.
Police were called to Peace Lutheran College in the Cairns suburb of Kamerunga about 10.35am on Tuesday.
Detective Inspector Jason Chetham from Queensland Police said “no other parties were involved”.
“We had staff in that vicinity and they were able to respond quickly and took the male into custody,” he told reporters.
“There was no further threat to the staff or the students and we were able to secure that area very quickly.
“It was a horrific event but it was isolated and there are no other parties involved so it is safe to attend school tomorrow.”
Investigations are continuing, with no charges laid at this stage.

Peace Lutheran College confirmed both the alleged victim and man taken into custody were students.
“A student is receiving treatment in hospital and one student is being questioned by police. All parents have been contacted,” the spokeswoman said.
“The school will continue to assist Queensland Police Service in their investigations. All other students and staff are being provided with support.
“Peace Lutheran College’s current focus is providing support to all members of community who have been affected by this tragic incident.
“We ask the community to keep our injured student in their prayers.”
