A heroic act from two bystanders was not enough to stop an armed robber from fleeing the scene of the alleged crime in Sydney’s southwest.

Two men managed to wrestle the thief off his motorbike after he entered a convenience store in Campbelltown, armed with a pistol, and demanded cash and cigarettes.

Officers were called to the store on Hoddle St after a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entered the shop armed with a pistol about 1pm Sunday.

He threatened a 62-year-old store employee who handed over cash before the man fled from the store and jumped onto a black and white Yamaha road bike, which was parked outside.

The staff member chased the man and called on two male bystanders for help.

The two men managed to wrestle the armed man from the motorbike but after a short struggle he escaped on foot.

He was last seen running towards the rear fence of a unit block in Hoddle St.

A crime scene has been established and detectives are now calling for witnesses.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Campbelltown Police on (02) 4620 1199 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
