A Townsville aircraft engineer has been awarded a national award for her innovative work in defence aviation.

Army veteran Amy Macallister served 11 years as an aviation technician before transitioning into a career with Boeing Defence Australia, in a move that’s seen her career soar.

Ms Macallister recently won the technical trades category at the Women in Defence Awards, for her work on the CH-47F Chinook Integrated Support Services contract based at RAAF Base Townsville.

“I left in green and came back in blue the next day and that’s allowed me to stay in Townsville and flexibility with young kids,” Ms Macallister said.

“It opened up a lot of opportunities to expand in aviation and into other areas of the industry.

“I’d love to stay in the chinook capability but move up to the logistics and management side of aviation because it gives the ability to look at what’s driving the things we do on the workshop floor and the decisions.”

Despite already having 12 years of aircraft maintenance experience under her belt, Ms Macallister said she’s been supported to continually look for new and innovative ways to improve in her job.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have a team that invested a lot of time and energy to ensuring I could progress,”

“There are so many different ways to achieve the same things in aviation and there’s a lot of hard work that goes on by our teams who have years of experience.

“We’re always given the opportunity to take from all of those people and build your own ways.”
