Wednesday Noticeboard

Today’s noticeboard is brought to you by the departure of Woolworths boss Brad Banducci just one month after the supermarket giant’s stupid shunning of Australia Day.

Hit the road, wokie
Hit the road, wokie

It’s hasn’t been the easiest few weeks for Banducci, who’s now collecting his receipt in the checkout aisle:

Woolworths chief executive Brad Banducci has announced his intention to step down from the supermarket giant, with his shock departure coming as he faced community anger over the retailer’s refusal to stock Australia Day merchandise, allegations of price gouging, public inquiries into the sector and just this week a trainwreck interview on the ABC …

Woolworths said Mr Banducci has given notice of his intention to retire and, by agreement with the board, will leave in September 2024, Woolworths Group’s 100th year.

The company’s Australia Day decision was dire, and Banducci’s subsequent clumsy explanations only made things worse. Then came an attempted walkout during an ABC interview about pricing issues.

Still, it wasn’t the worst corporate communications disaster of all time. The UK’s Gerald Ratner is still the champion in that particular arena:

Business lesson from the examples of Banducci and Ratner: don’t insult your customers. Fairly simple, really.
