MINISTER PYNE O GREEN

Just like Labor and the Greens, Christopher Pyne evidently prefers a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage to a public vote.

Just like Labor and the Greens, Christopher Pyne evidently prefers a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage to a public vote.

But that’s a side issue compared to Pyne’s greater revelation:

Christopher Pyne has been caught on tape revealing plans to introduce same-sex marriage “sooner than everyone thinks” and boasting that the Liberal Party is now run by its left faction.

The leaked recording captures the Defence Industry Minister, a soft-Liberal powerbroker and close ally of Malcolm Turnbull, making the explosive remarks at an afterparty following the federal Liberal Council gala dinner on Friday evening.

“Friends, we are in the winner’s circle but we have to deliver a couple of things and one of those we’ve got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country,” Mr Pyne says on the tape, obtained by The Daily Telegraph columnist Andrew Bolt.

“We’re going to get it. I think it might even be sooner than everyone thinks. And your friends in Canberra are working on that outcome.”

And now the main course:

Mr Pyne then celebrated the success of the left faction of the Liberal Party. “Two years ago … Malcolm Turnbull was the communications minister and now he’s the Prime Minister,” Mr Pyne said.

“I would say that our fortunes are pretty good at the moment.”

You’ve got a one-seat majority and you’ve lost every poll this year to Labor. This is fine.

“And most of your senior Cabinet ministers, George Brandis, Marise Payne, yours truly, quite a few of us are very senior ministers in a Turnbull government.

“Now there was a time when people said it wouldn’t happen, but George and I kept the faith. We voted for Malcolm Turnbull in every ballot he’s ever been in.”

And they’re proud of it. What unusual people. Tony Abbott’s response is to the point:

“We took a policy to the election – it was a very clear policy – that there would be no change without a plebiscite,” Mr Abbott told Sydney radio station 2GB this morning.

“To dump the plebiscite, to do anything without a plebiscite, would be a breach of faith with the people.”

Liberal leftists broke faith with the people – especially Liberal voters – a long, long time ago.
