Reminders! Terrible Reminders Everywhere!

A Sydney council Greens lady is done with repairing a statue of Captain Cook and instead wants the historic structure removed.

Fabric, earrings, makeup, white women and Greens are all reminders of colonialism, so Mayor Veitch is duty bound to cancel herself

The statue is said to be an awful reminder of the day a visitor arrived:

A Sydney mayor has called for a 114-year-old statue in the eastern suburbs to be removed, saying it was a “reminder of colonial oppression” after it was vandalised for the second time in almost four years.

Randwick Council said in a Facebook statement the Captain Cook statue in Randwick was vandalised on February 15 and it was working with local police “who are investigating the matter”.

The council also said it had engaged heritage stonework specialists to “repair the monument” and condemned “all acts of vandalism”.

While acknowledging the council’s condemnation, Randwick Greens Mayor Philipa Veitch said it was her “strong personal view” that statues, like Captain Cook, “should be taken down and removed from our civic spaces”.

“They stand as a symbol and reminder of colonial oppression,” she said.

Removing Cook’s statue is fine, so far as it goes. But Mayor Philipa Veitch needs to step things up a bit.

Here are a few other things that also remind us of colonialism, and therefore must be removed:

Sydney; the office of mayor; a system for counting years; statues; the eastern suburbs; vandalism; Randwick Council; Facebook; February; police; heritage stonework specialists; monuments; the Greens; Mayor Philipa Veitch; and civic spaces.

Gotta start somewhere. Let’s take the Greens down first, seeing as they so desperately wish for history to be erased.
