Not Warm Enough for a Climate Protest

Demonstrating absolute commitment to their cause, climate activists yesterday cancelled a protest against News Corporation because of rain.

More than 400 people had indicated on Facebook their willingness to attend, but then it became a little damp so everybody stayed at home.

“Bring a pillow, a beach towel, maybe a li-lo, your creative signs/placards, some nibbles and all your friends,” organiser Brad Pedersen had earlier written to promote what he described as a “lie-in” outside News Corporation’s Sydney headquarters.

Mr Petersen promised a yoga instructor and “fabulous speakers from various political and community groups” to entertain protesters until yesterday’s gentle, soothing rain frightened everyone away.

Human rights lawyer and failed Labor candidate George Newhouse had cheered the protest just hours prior to the mild downpour’s arrival.

“Loving the News Corp protest outside The Daily Telegraph and The Australian,” Newhouse wrote on Twitter, alongside an image of a solitary elderly gentleman holding a placard.

Organiser Pedersen yesterday vowed to lead a similar protest on January 31, but perhaps he’d better prepare another cancellation plan.

Weatherspark.com notes: “On average, there is a 30 per cent chance that more than 10 millimetres of total precipitation will fall in Sydney throughout the day on January 31.”

Meanwhile, thousands of volunteer firefighters yesterday slogged through mud and ash as they continued battling numerous fires throughout NSW.
