New Zealand Makes U Sad

A few weeks ago I wrote a little column illustrating how even inoffensive comments might now trigger outrage. Thanks to Jacinda Ardern’s prissy paradise, that piece has now been brought to life.

A few weeks ago I wrote a little column illustrating how even inoffensive comments might now trigger outrage. Thanks to Jacinda Ardern’s prissy paradise, that piece has now been brought to life.

Here’s an extract from the column:

In our current outrage era, it is impossible to conceive of any statement, any statement at all, that is completely incapable of causing offence. You can test this at home in a fun game with your children.

Just come up with the blandest possible comments and invite your kids to express furious rejection.

You: “Let’s all enjoy some delicious ice cream.”

Kid: “Thanks for the type 2 diabetes, fascist.”

And here’s how New Zealand converted a joke into reality:

A New Zealand shop has been forced to remove a Streets ice cream advertisement that stated “Ice cream makes u happy”

A local resident complained to the New Zealand Advertising Standards Authority that the advertisement outside the Tui Crescent Foodmarket in Whangarei promoted an unhealthy relationship with food.

The complainant cited New Zealand’s obesity figures as reason for their complaint about the ad.

The Advertising Standards Authority sided with the complainant, arguing that by connecting ice cream with happiness it could be detrimental to peoples’ health.

This is why New Zealand lost the World Cup.
