It’s a major breakthrough, everybody! Guardian reporter Sam Wollaston has discovered how to massively cut the spread of coronavirus. It’s done simply by electing a female leader, after which virus reduction occurs as if by magic:

There was a nice Facebook post in early April by the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen . In it, she is doing the washing up while singing along to a hit by the 80s Danish popsters Dodo and the Dodos during her country’s weekly TV lockdown singalong.

Guardian reporters are the transfixed kittens of media. As long as it doesn’t involve Trump, Boris or Morrison, everything appears to them as an enticing ball of yarn.

Frederiksen is having a good crisis – not just the kitchen karaoke, but in acting quickly and clearly to shut down the country, limiting deaths, at the time of writing, to 443.

Compare that with neighbouring Sweden, which has taken a less stringent approach and where there have been 2,462 deaths. There are obviously loads of factors involved, but could it have something to do with the fact that Frederiksen is a woman?

Denmark’s population is 5.8 million. Frederiksen’s country has lost only 0.007 per cent of its people to the virus. Good.

But Australia has lost just 93 at present from a population of 25 million – so we’re running at merely 0.0003 per cent.

Could it have something to do with the fact the Prime Minister Scott Morrison is a man? Well, who knows. What with gender fluidity and all, maybe he identifies as a chick when formulating coronavirus policies.

In other gender-themed coronavirus developments, let’s hear from Ryan Heath and Renuka Rayasam at Politico:

During this plague year, there is almost never good news, only degrees of bad news. Even so, the pandemic has been different (and worse) for girls and women.

It’s true that more men are dying than women from Covid-19 around the world — but that’s not exactly cause for celebration.

I wouldn’t have thought so. Not in any circumstances.
