An Anxious Nation Holds its Breath
Basketballer Liz Cambage is threatening to boycott the Olympics because she is upset by two photographs of the Australian squad.
Cambage’s apparent problem with the images is that they don’t include Liz Cambage:
She shared two images — one of athletes showing off Australia’s uniform for the Games and another promoting the official underwear sponsor of the team — she said were examples of whitewashing and did not represent the diverse backgrounds of Australia’s athletes.
“If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, HOW AM I MEANT TO REPRESENT A COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T EVEN REPRESENT ME,” Cambage wrote.
These were just promo shots, by the way. And one of them did feature an Indigenous athlete:
The second image included Indigenous Rugby Sevens player Maurice Longbottom but Cambage wrote: “Also fake tan doesn’t equal diversity.”
Longbottom is Aboriginal. Cambage was born to a Nigerian father and raised by her Harvard Business School graduate mother Julia:
Keep going, Elizabeth:
“Y’all do anything to remove POC (People of Colour) from the forefront when it’s black athletes leading the pack,” she added.
“Until I see y’all doin more @AusOlympicTeam Imma sit this one out.”
Previously from Liz:
“You can post and pretend all you want right here, but until I see you guys out in the streets being real-a** allies, you ain’t f***ing s***.”
Why is an adult who was born in London and grew up in Coffs Harbour trying to sound like a 90s gangsta rapper?
UPDATE. Yo, homies. Dizzy fo’ shizzy Lizzie C. is back in da house for round two of her one-woman racial outrage carnival. Word:
Cambage doubled down on her anger Friday night, taking to her Instagram Stories to call on Australia to “wake the f*** up” …
She captioned one photo of her sticking her tongue out on her Instagram stories: “I DO NOT CARE FOR A WHITE MAN’S OPINION ON RACIAL ISSUES. NEVER HAVE. NEVER WILL”.
Sounds a little … racist. Liz also “cleared up confusion” over “a misinterpreted suggestion that Indigenous rugby player Maurice Longbottom was wearing ‘fake tan’”:
“I know who Maurice Longbottom is, he was the one wearing the indigenous uniform.”
Indigenous requires an upper-case “I”, sweetheart.
“I wasn’t saying he had fake tan on, I’m talking about the rest of the photo.
“One token POC in a photo is not good enough at AOC [the Australian Olympic Committee]. That’s what I’m talking about.”
So now Longbottom is just a “token”. Not really very good at this whole “clearing up confusion” business, is she?
“It’s sad, the whitewashing is sad. Your black athletes lead you everywhere. Indigenous Athletes are some of the best athletes we have and y’all don’t use them at all.”
But there’s one in the promo pic.
“One POC in a photo is not good enough for me. I shouldn’t have to hold the Australian Olympic Committee and their partners accountable from the other side of the world.”
Several committee members are white men, Liz. You don’t listen to them.
“And yes, I saw the apology, words don’t mean anything to me, actions mean something to me. So let me see it. Because until then im not buying s***. And that’s just how it is. And I’m going to keep talking my s*** because I’m doing it for the little girls and little boys who are people of colour.
“Asian, black, indigenous – wherever you’re from in this whole world. It’s important to see people who look like you in the media. And white Australia, you would never understand that, because you’ve never had to deal with it …
“Australia, if you have an issue with the words, you are the issue. And, you can kiss my black ass.”
Now she’s sounding like every black judge in American pop culture since the 70s. This women is a racial-referencing goldmine.
