David Leyonhjelm made the comments on Miranda Devine’s online radio show Miranda Live — following a decision by the federal government not to ban live sheep exports.
Mr Leyonhjelm — who is also a vet — says “most of the time the sheep gain weight on the trip”.
“The death rate on farms is typically higher than it is on the ship,” he told Devine.
