RUSSELL CROWE has revealed his songwriting habit is beyond mere doodling and is more a “compulsion” he enjoys at times more than acting.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph’s Miranda Devine on her podcast radio show, the Hollywood and rugby league management stalwart aired samples of some of his self-written favourites, including a song called Midnight.

“Whoever did the edit, it came in on what I consider to be one of the best lines I’ve ever written!” Crowe laughed.

“It goes, ‘We lived the world at night like a road train, taking on no pain, we had to slow it all down. We’ve done things the kids will never know, but we’ve got cards to show, to turn it a moment around’.

“These are very personal songs, absolutely. That’s what drives that part of me and always has.”

Amid entertaining anecdotes about his father’s technophobia and going to No. 1 in the UK on one performance, Crowe spoke about the cathartic effects of the divorce auction and his early encounters in Los Angeles in 1992.

Crowe estimated he shifted about 90 per cent of items for sale.

“There were a couple of things I priced to sort of make sure I took home,” he said.
