Miranda Live: Police have prevented ‘Columbine-style school attacks’

ON the day that the NSW police were issued with military assault rifles for the first time, Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has revealed the expanded police powers announced this year had allowed the state’s police to stop several mass school shootings.

ON the day the NSW police were issued with automatic military assault rifles for the first time, Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has revealed the expanded police powers announced this year had allowed the state’s police to stop several mass school shootings.

The Fixated Persons Unit, a “go-between” unit that aims to prevent lone-wolf attacks by combining counter-terrorism policing with mental health assessments, has arrested almost 20 people this year he told Daily Telegraph columnist on Miranda Live.

“Some of those [arrested] were in the process of planning Columbine-type attacks at local schools. We’re not sitting on our hands,” he told Devine.

“They don’t profile as a terrorist but they are capable of terrorist activities.”

As well as preventing lone-wolf attacks, foreign fighters returning from overseas remain a focus of the Police Commissioner.

“We’ve got a number of active targets that we are monitoring now and New South Welshman overseas who we are expecting back at some stage. We will be all over them as well,” he said.

Today saw M-4 carbines issued to tactical police from the Riot Squad as part of a ramped up approach to tackling terror.

Mr Fuller the long arms were a better way to tackle situation such as the Lindt siege and provided officers with greater capacity.
