THE use of mobile phones in NSW classrooms will be scrutinised in what is an Australian-first inquiry.

Child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg will lead the investigation which was ordered by Education Minister Rob Stokes over concerns about cyber-bullying and safety.

LISTEN TO MICHAEL CARR-GREGG ON MIRANDA LIVE:

Dr Carr-Gregg told Miranda Live it’s a much-needed review and that incidents of bullying can no longer be left up to principals, “there is no state, no territory with a policy position”.

He is also be tasked by reviewing footage of schoolyard violence and examining why students film and post footage online.

“A lot of it is because they want their 15 megabytes of fame and one way to climb the social totem pole in 2018 is to get as many likes, or as much digital approval as you possibly can”, he said.

Parents have also been sent a strong message, with Dr Carr-Gregg urging adults to put away the ipads and mobile phones at cafes and restaurants as it sets a pattern of bad behaviour that children carry into their teenage years.

“I think a lot of parents are role modelling exactly the wrong message, part of the problem will have to be parent education”.
