The often controversial Liberal Democrat said he supported US President Donald Trump’s recent call to arm some teachers in the wake of the recent deadly mass shooting in Florida’s Broward County.

“I want my schools protected just like I want my banks protected,” Mr Trump said, following the most recent mass shooting that left 17 dead.
“If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly.”
Mr Trump’s call to arm teachers has repeatedly been shot down by everyone from education professionals to veterans, who have dismissed the idea as dangerous.
But Mr Leyonhjelm, who is also a sporting shooter and president of the Sydney-based Inner West Hunters Club, said Mr Trump faced a “unique” problem.
“There’s something about America, it’s unique and probably requires a unique solution,” Mr Leyonhjelm told columnist Miranda Devine on her online radio show Miranda Live.
“These shootings typically happen in “gun free zones” (schools).
“The argument is that the nutters who carry out these shootings in gun free zones do realise these are safe areas — by that logic ... an American solution would be that teachers who want to, take out a concealed carry (permit).
“And the nutters, the bad guys, will never know who has a gun.”
