Miranda Live: Australia is lucky, says ex-terror boss
A FORMER counter-terrorism boss claims Australia has been lucky during the rise of global terrorism, but told Miranda Live he is sceptical about overcoming radical extremism in the near future.
A FORMER counter-terror boss who helped lock up the most dangerous terrorists Australia has ever seen says an attack may only be a matter of time.
Peter Moroney was involved in Operation Pendennis which identified two extremist terror cells in 2005 and thwarted a possible New Year’s Eve strike on Sydney Harbour.

The former Detective Sergeant has revealed the details behind Pendennis in his tell-all book ‘Terrorism in Australia’.
When asked by Miranda Live host Miranda Devine if he thinks Australia will be targeted again, Mr Moroney said, “I hope I’m wrong with what I say … I think through good police work and intelligence work, we’ve been lucky”.
“Part of me doesn’t want to say we never will be, because you become complacent … but the number of plots that we’ve stopped is on the increase, so unfortunately that may only make it a point and a time for us”, he said.
Mr Moroney also detailed his encounters with Khaled Sharrouf before the Australian terrorist was killed while fighting alongside Islamic State in the Middle East, and likened solving the threat of terrorism to solving drug abuse.
“I would suggest probably not in my lifetime”.
