FORMER Rebels associate Mark Judge was stabbed nine times in an attack that will leave him in a coma for days.

The Daily Telegraph has been told Judge was stabbed in the chest, as well as the neck and thigh and is lucky to be still alive considering the location of his wounds.

After further surgery today, Judge is expected to be in an induced coma for days, meaning police will have to wait to interview him about the identity of his attacker.

A spokesperson for St Vincent's Hospital said Mr Judge's condition is still classed as "extremely critical", despite successful surgery yesterday to stem massive bleeding and organ damage.

An armed attacker plunged a knife into Judge after ambushing him inside the garage of his upmarket home yesterday.

Mr Judge, the high-flying bad boy once linked to a drug-fuelled episode with actress Jodi Gordon, was believed to be returning to his Bellevue Hill apartment building after a grocery shopping trip.

He was fighting for his life last night after four hours of emergency surgery that removed one of his kidneys and parts of his lung and his bowel, those close to him said.

Six girlfriends rush to Judge's bedside

Despite Mr Judge being known to carry up to $10,000 in cash and wear designer watches worth $100,000, police do not believe robbery was a motive. His wallet, mobile phone and other belongings were untouched.

However, police sources said Mr Judge's history of violent assaults, soured business dealings, drug offences, links to the Rebels bikie gang and being a well-known ladies' man had created a long list of potential suspects and motives.

"With his reputation and history it could be anybody," one senior police officer said.

As tributes were posted on Facebook urging him to recover, one claimed that he had been "stabbed repeatedly by three rivals".

One Facebook tribute said: "Some people choose a wild life- style but it doesn't mean they're a bad person. Saying a prayer for notorious Mark Judge who is currently fighting for his life after being broken into and stabbed repeatedly by three rivals."

A blood trail marked the route where Mr Judge, who was alone, had staggered through the open garage door and crossed Birriga Rd, before collapsing on the other side.

Two women who know Mr Judge, one of whom is believed to be his girlfriend, told police they were driving past and rushed to his aid, calling for emergency services.

A female sergeant and a male constable from Rose Bay arrived before paramedics and gave first aid to Mr Judge, bleeding heavily from the wounds in his chest.

Superintendent Jason Joyce said: "They applied pressure to the wounds to stop the bleeding - they did a fantastic job."

Due to his condition Mr Judge could not tell police what happened and officers hope to interview him as soon as possible.

Police have not found a weapon and last night said CCTV cameras in the garage did not film the attack, but other cameras would be checked. There were no witnesses and no one reported hearing any noises.

Police are seeking a man aged in his early to mid 20s, wearing dark-coloured clothing and a black backpack seen heading west on Birriga Rd on foot after the stabbing.

Doctors were closely monitoring Mr Judge, 31, in intensive care. Further surgery is expected today.

One of his best friends, Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim, was told of the attack while in the US and was deciding whether to return, while a number of current and past girlfriends were at the hospital.

Supt Joyce said it was unclear who attacked Mr Judge or why.

Gang squad officers have been called in to assist the investigation.

Mr Judge has an admitted history of drug use but it believed to have been clean in court-ordered drug and urine tests for a couple of years.

In October 2002 at Penrith Local Court Mr Judge was convicted of possessing a prohibited drug. In 2005 he received a two-year suspended sentence for assault and threatening a female prosecution witness. In December 2008 he was fined $750 for hindering a police officer in Potts Point and in February this year he pleaded guilty in the District Court to the malicious wounding six years ago of a man who failed to repay a $70,000 loan.

The court imposed the first-ever intensive corrections order which has required Mr Judge to undertake regular urine tests. All have come back clean.
