Banksy’s mural of workman chiselling away at a star in the European Union flag mysteriously disappears from building

A famous Brexit-themed mural by street artist Banksy has disappeared from a building in England, leaving locals to bemoan its tragic demise.

An iconic Brexit-themed mural painted by beloved British street artist Banksy has disappeared from the side of a building in Dover, England.

The mural of a workman chiselling away at a star in the European Union flag had been on the Castle Amusements building since 2017.

But CNN reports that the mural, which symbolised the UK’s impending exit from the EU, has vanished.

Dover man David Joseph Wright told CNN that four-tier scaffolding was erected beside the mural on Saturday and the artwork was gone by the next morning.

The mural had become a landmark in Dover, the ferry port that connects the UK with France. Tourists had often stopped to see the painting and take selfies with an original Banksy.

“Why??? I can’t understand why they’ve whitewashed this masterpiece,” Lisa Green-Jones, a resident of Dover, said on Facebook.

“It’s an absolutely tragedy. I had family over from Ireland recently and when we got to town the first thing they said was can we go see the Banksy.”

An Instagram user posted a picture of the mural and said: “Just glad I captured this original @banksy artwork before it was painted over — think it’s unfair that someone decides to ruin another’s piece of art.”

In July, The Sun reported that Banksy had been voted Britain’s favourite painter of all time in an opinion poll.
