SYDNEY Harbour Bridge will be lit up with the images of 62,000 falling poppies — each one representing a Digger who died during WWI.
Images of the poppies will start falling from the Bridge pylons every 15 minutes from tonight as part of a moving tribute that will light up the Sydney landmark with powerful images from WWI, including historic portraits of Australian soldiers.
“The Sydney Harbour Bridge steel pylons standing 89m tall will soon proudly display images focusing on our brave Anzac men and women who gave their lives for our country,” NSW Roads and Maritime minister Duncan Gay said.
Images displayed on the Bridge have been carefully selected from the NSW State Library and the War Memorial collection to play a key role in the Anzac centenary celebrations. The story behind each image will be available on the RMS website.
“The Bridge is one of our most important Australian icons and it’s appropriate during this anniversary that we help commemorate the legacies of the Anzacs using this landmark,” Mr Gay said.
“Our fallen Diggers taught us the qualities of mateship and strength and established the foundation of the Australian way of life and the values we live by today,” he said.
