First impressions of Gallipoli

DIRECT descendants of original Anzacs who will sing at the Gallipoli Dawn Service have rehearsed at Anzac Cove.

The members of the St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace-All Hallows’ combined schools choir sang for the cameras during a windy welcome on the beach.

It is the fourth year the choir, including 34 current and former students aged 13 to 23, has performed at the dawn service.

Among the choristers is Gabby Behm, 14, whose great-grandfather, Charles Eastment, served as a stretcher-bearer at Gallipoli.

Eastment married in Brisbane just before heading off to war.

Yesterday, Gabby, in year 10 at All Hallows’, said it was hard to process her first impressions of Anzac Cove, given its historical significance and the loss of so much life.

“He did especially well just coming home,” she said of her great grandfather.
