BRENDALE’s Les Lenton has combined his two great passions to help mark the Anzac centenary this year.
Mr Lenton was commissioned by the Pine Rivers Art Gallery to produce a work to commemorate the centenary, and chose to focus on the Battle of Lone Pine.
The four-day battle took place in August 1915 and was named after the solitary Turkish pine tree that stood on the battlefield at the start of fighting.
Mr Lenton, 84, was an advertising artist and spent 16 years in the Army Reserve.
He said his mixed-media work had been more than 12 months in the making, with extensive research behind the work.
“There are over 150 action figures in the painting,” Mr Lenton said.
The work will remain on display at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery throughout April.
The gallery will be closed on Anzac Day.
Mr Lenton said there was an enormous amount of pride in being asked to complete the work, and he hoped it would find a home in an RSL at a later date.
He said he would be happy to discuss the work with the public.
