#AnzacDay tweets to be archived by Australian War Memorial

FROM telegrams to tweets, we’ve come a long way in 100 years. Here’s how you can mark Anzac Day on social media.

#AnzacDay: Robert 'Crash' Craddock shares his Anzac story

AS WE approach the Anzac Day centenary, News Corp Australia and Twitter are encouraging all Australians to join the conversation and commemorate those who have gone before them by using the #AnzacDay hashtag.

If you have a photo, video or 140-character message you would like to share with the rest of the country on one of Australia’s most important days, tweet it using #AnzacDay.

The News Corp team will then collate the tweets and archive them at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The tweets will also be displayed throughout the Anzac Eve Concert at the Courier-Mail Piazza at Brisbane’s South Bank between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, and at the Anzac Celebration Concert on Anzac Day, which will feature a performance by country music legend Troy Cassar-Daley.

#AnzacDay tweets also will feature at the traditional Essendon v Collingwood match at the MCG, the Gold Coast Suns’ AFL clash with GWS at Startrack Oval in Canberra, and at the Adelaide Oval, where Port Adelaide take on Hawthorn.

Australian War Memorial director Brendan Nelson said Australians had historically used pen and paper to keep in touch with family and friends to share their thoughts and feelings.

Today, messages on phones, tablets and computers served the same purpose.

“The need to be connected is the same, and this year the memorial is keen to mark the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli landings by collecting tweets which show how this significant anniversary was commemorated,” Dr Nelson said.

“This collection of tweets will be preserved and will form part of the memorial’s collection, to ensure researchers in future generations get a glimpse of what Australians did to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.”
