Anzac spirit strong in both soldiers and those left on the home front

THE sacrifices of both soldiers and those left behind on the home front are the first things that come to mind on Anzac Day for 13-year-old Tanah Egan.

WHEN Tanah Egan, 13, thinks of the war, the sacrifice made by soldiers and those on the home front is among the first things that come to mind.

“I think of how sad it is that all those people died and how horrible war is and how some of those men weren’t much older than me when they went to war,” the Albury student said.

“So many men went overseas to war and the people at home, especially the women, had to take on the jobs that the men normally did.”

Tanah’s ancestor, Monica Marie Byrne, served in WWI as a nurse.

Tanah said it was tough for surviving soldiers and their families, to go back to normality.

“The men that came back were still suffering with wounds, and also suffering mentally from what they had seen and suffered and the people at home didn’t realise this,” she said.
