It's time to give rats a chance

By RHYLEA MILLAR

Not everyone falls head over heels for rats, but a growing community of rodent-lovers  is hoping to change minds with their quirky pocket pets.

Brianna Tucker, 18, started a Facebook group, Toowoomba and Surrounds Rodent Enthusiasts, after she struggled to find information about pet rodents at a local level.

Designed to create a social environment for owners of small animals including rats, mice and guinea pigs, the group has quickly grown to 80 members

It's now a thriving community of small pet lovers who share their experiences and discuss rodent breeds, varieties and colours.

Ironically, I have two snakes already, but my obsession for snakes quickly turned into one for rats out of nowhere and there weren’t really any groups like this set up in Toowoomba.

Group member Freya Wiedman, 18, adopted two rats Rico and Luna when they were just eight-weeks-old.

After giving the sweet pair a home about six months ago, Ms Wiedman has already developed a strong bond with them.

When I first met them, there was an instant connection. They’re actually kind of like a mix between a dog and a cat – they are really social and playful and their personalities are all so different.

The two rodent enthusiasts said they hoped the group would help debunk stereotypes associated with the social critters.
