Uncle Wayne Fossey debunks Uluru Statement myths

Does the Uluru Statement have anything to do with native title? Will it create a third house of parliament?University of Southern Queensland's elder-in residence Uncle Wayne Fossey explains the misconceptions.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart was created by more than 250 Indigenous delegates at the First Nations Constitutional Convention at Uluru in 2017.

What is the Uluru Statement?

The statement is an invitation to the Australian people to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders "in a movement for a better future".

An Indigenous Voice to parliament: an advisory body to express views to politicians on policies and laws affecting First Nations communities.

What does it asks for?

A Makarrata Commission: to oversee treaty-making and truth-telling between the Australian Government and First Nations people.

Uncle Wayne Fossey was 17 when First Nations people were first counted as part of the Australian population after the landmark 1967 referendum.

An elder's perspective

Now 72, the proud Gurang Gurang and Yugambeh man hopes to see another referendum on the back of a change of government and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Enshrining a ‘voice’ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution would have to be done via a referendum. The Constitution can only be changed by the Australian people.

Why a referendum?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to honour the Uluru Statement but Uncle Wayne said significant education was still needed as there were many misconceptions.

Firstly, he said the proposal had nothing to do with native title and granted indigenous people no special property rights.

Toowoomba people think it’s about native title, but it’s got nothing to do with that. People say that we’re going to take their property, which is just ridiculous.

The misconceptions

Secondly, he said a Voice would not create a third house of parliament, as politicians like former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce have suggested.

Uncle Wayne said the process would involve a significant amount of “truth-telling” about Australia’s history.

We (First Nations) have not previously been recognised under the law, we were invaded and Terra Nullius was used in terms of legality to justify it.

The truth-telling
