Inside Queensland’s new exclusive reef sleep

Surrounded by a ring of turquoise, a new luxury stay in the sheltered waters off Lady Musgrave Island is offering visitors to the Great Barrier Reef an experience like no other.
Until now, camping has been the only way to stay at Lady Musgrave, the region’s only coral island, measuring less than 20ha.

The new three-level pontoon, Lady Musgrave HQ, lets visitors get up close to the Reef's marine life then sleep under the stars at the end of the day.
The pontoon offers overnight accommodation for 20 people in reef-view canopy beds on the upper deck, plus 20 people in a dorm setting in the underwater observatory.
From the upper deck, guests can spot turtles and manta rays while sipping on champagne and dine on gourmet food sourced from local producers.
The experience is the brainchild of luxury charter cruise veteran Brett Lakey, who had a dream to share the wonders of the Reef with the world.
The water clarity and an abundance of marine life makes it a prime snorkelling spot, and guests are encouraged to venture into the “aquarium” – a naturally occurring shallow lagoon surrounded by coral.

The Lady Musgrave Experience also does short trips to the island in a glass-bottom boat with picnic hampers available.
The stay can be paired with one of Queensland’s most enduring tourism experiences – turtle nesting at Mon Repos, about 15 minutes east of Bundaberg.
