Like Byron, The Coromandel was NZ's hippy central and while the communes of the '60s and '70s are gone, its natural surrounds and eclectic vibe still draws people in.
The Coromandel
The region is home to distinctive townships, from the boutique Coromandel Town and Thames to creative coastal towns like Hahei, Whitianga and Whangamata.
A jewel of a seaside town on Mercury Bay, Hahei is a favourite with holidaymakers for its long stunning white sand beach.

Hahei is also the kick-off point for walks and tours to Cathedral Cove, the iconic archway and pristine golden beach.
Take a 30-minute drive from this cool town and dig your own spa pool at Hot Water Beach.

Kayak out to the Whenuakura Wildlife Sanctuary, where a large collapse volcanic blow hole has created a turquoise lagoon.
