Concern rising over Putin’s nuclear threats

Words: Megan Palin and Chloe Grimshaw

delivered a chilling warning on a call with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Referencing the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, he allegedly said “you don’t need to attack the major cities in order to win”.

The threat comes just weeks after Russia was first reportedly considering using tactical nuclear bombs  in Ukraine.

That immediately raised concerns across the world.

Tactical nuclear weapons are small warheads for use on the battlefield. They can be fired by one person or a group of people, making them highly mobile.

But the threat to civilianpopulations remains significant.

In the UK, ex-PM Liz Truss reportedly received daily weather updates, to know which way wind might carryirradiated materials if Russia did launch a nuclear strike.

Fears for damagednuclear plant

Meanwhile the threat of disaster remains at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

UN officials say if the nuclear material there gets too hot, the plant could meltdown.

Technicians are running out of fuels needed to keep the Russia-held facility cool.

In Kyiv, due to electricity shortages, officials are enforcing nightly power blackouts. From 6pm, power availability issignificantly reduced.

Kyiv's mayor saysRussia is deliberatelytargeting civilian infrastructure.

Regular power cuts

We are doing everything to prevent this from happening but, let's be honest, our enemies are doing everything to ensure that the city is without heat, electricity and water supply and, in general, that we all die.
