Is Australia ready for a bin chicken mascot in 2032?

The 2032 Brisbane Games need a mascot.

And a surprising contender has entered the field...

Sports Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has suggested the white ibis would be a good contender to represent the River City.

Known for its habit of rummaging through garbage, Mr Hinchliffe said he had a soft spot for the bird when quizzed about mascots.

The ibis might play a role and I know there’s plenty of Queenslanders who think that might be appropriate as well. This is something that we can work on as a community to help tell our story to the globe.

But Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says it's unlikely the Ibis would be a mascot, but would let the public decide.

Usually an animal or a figure with cultural significance, mascots have been a Summer Olympic Games fixture since 1972.

Syd the platypus, Olly the kookaburra, and Millie the echidna were selected as the three mascots for the 2000 Games in Sydney.

During the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, Matilda – the giant, winking kangaroo – served as the River City’s mascot.

When Borobi became the mascot for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, it was the first time a koala had been chosen.

A campaign was launched last year pushing for the Sunshine Coast’s Big Pineapple to become the mascot for the 2032 Games.

Should the Ibis be 2032 mascot?
