What happened to Mackay's forgotten killers?

Words: Janessa Ekert Producer: Simone Kealy

From a frenzied attack with a carving knife to a deadly trio with a samurai sword, this is where Mackay's convicted killers are now.

Antony Daniel Morseu had been in a jealous rage the morning he stabbed his former girlfriend, Amanda Kay Sauney, 25, to death in a frenzy on December 18, 2010.

Violent rage led to a senseless killing

The night before he killed her Morseu told several people, including members of her family, that he was “going to kill her” and he didn’t care if he went to prison, Mackay Supreme Court heard.

Morseu was jailed for life and under Queensland law must serve at least 20 years before he is eligible for parole. He remains at Borallon Training and Correctional Centre.

On October 11, 2015, Mala Owen Geissler, Joshua Don Francis Wales and Jeremy Kenneth Abell had hatched a plot to steal from an alleged drug peddler, when their efforts turned fatal.

Shocking death with a samurai sword over bungled robbery

The men had gone to the unit of Tyrone ‘Tubby’ Baynton, 29 – Geissler armed with a samurai sword, while Wales had a shortened pool cue.

Geissler thrust the sword through the closed unit door at neck height, unaware Mr Baynton was leaning against it inside to hold it shut. The sword pierced the door and into Mr Baynton’s neck.

Geissler was jailed for 12 years and a serious violent offender declaration was enacted, meaning he had to serve at least 9.5 years of the sentence before he could apply for parole.

Wales and Abell both pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Wales has since been released on parole. Abell’s parole term for this offence ended in 2021.
