A 19-year-old father who led police on a wild chase in a stolen car had been on parole less than a month for other serious driving offences.
Wearing an ankle tracker didn’t stop Jarvis Michael John Kool from taking the car on a joyride across the highway with two other offenders, ending in a chase through a Mount Ommaney shopping centre.
Kool pleaded guilty at Richlands Magistrates Court today to one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
The court was told Kool and his co-accused broke into a Mount Ommaney house through the side door.
The trio removed a set of keys they found to steal a Toyota LandCruiser.
Cards from the victim’s wallet were discarded on the road but two credit cards were kept.
A Polair helicopter was deployed after the car was spotted on the Centenary Motorway at 3pm yesterday.
Police pursued as the car drove off to the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre. All three offenders fled the vehicle.
Kool was arrested hiding in the food court.
Defence lawyer Rhys Foster told the court Kool was attempting to turn his life around for his three-year-old son, undertaking parenting courses and applying for jobs.
Magistrate Aaron Simpson said Kool had already racked up a poor record for multiple offences at only 19.
“You have a three-year-old son and on the track you’re heading now he’s not going to know you in life, because you’re going to find yourself locked up for life,” he told Kool.
“He’s got everything to live for.
Magistrate Simpson warned Kool he would end up failing his son unless he changed his ways, urging him to put his child first.
Kool was sentenced to nine months’ jail. He will be eligible for parole on October 27.
