A convicted rapist who preyed on a vulnerable elderly woman and kidnapped another female has been busted masturbating near a children’s playground.
Shane Lachlan Sorrenson has a history rape and deprivation of liberty convictions and he has returned to court again.
The 49-year-old has been in and out of jail for serious offences, including the rape of a 77-year-old woman after he broke into her home in 2008.
He was released on a strict supervision order in August last year after serving a 14-month jail sentence for taking a woman against her will and tying her up with dog collars in 2015.
On Monday, he pleaded guilty at Richlands Magistrates Court to committing an indecent act.
The court was told Sorrenson was seen masturbating in his car at the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre about 1.15pm on March 9.
His car was parked just metres from a children’s playground at the shopping centre.
At the time, Sorrenson was on a supervised release order in the community and had attended a doctor’s appointment that morning.
Defence lawyer Jacilynn Young said Sorrenson was “incredibly ashamed” of his actions.
She said Sorrensen was not looking at the playground at the time of his offending and no children witnessed him masturbating.
Magistrate Stuart Shearer said there was “no rational explanation” for the way Sorrensen conducted himself.
“Unless you were doing it for your own sexual gratification, where unfortunate people had to look at it as they walked past,” Magistrate Shearer said.
Sorrensen was sentenced to eight months’ prison with an immediate parole eligibility date.
He will have to apply for release again.
In 2008, Sorrenson broke into the home of an elderly woman, tied her up and raped her.
He received a nine-year jail sentence.
He was released on parole in 2014 but jailed again in 2017 for deprivation of liberty.
Sorrensen tied up a woman he was seeing with dog collars, covered her mouth with tape and left her in a tent in mangrove scrub near Jacobs Well in 2015.
