Police say they intercepted hundreds of vessels around North Stradbroke Island last week as they enforced tough travel compliance restrictions put in place to stop the spread of coronavirus.

POLICE have intercepted 500 boats around North Stradbroke Island in the last week and told them to keep 100m away as they enforce coronavirus measures, it can be revealed.

“The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is continuing to ensure the compliance of travel restrictions to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) to support the whole of government approach to reducing the spread of COVID-19, particularly to vulnerable communities,” police said in statement today.

“Since commencing operations at Toondah Harbour on 26 March 2020, 31 vehicles and 70 people have been turned away from travelling to the island.

“A marine exclusion zone was placed around the island to support the operation. Water Police and partner agencies have intercepted 504 vessels in or near the exclusion zone.

“This was a proactive measure to engage with the boating community and to provide them with information and advice about the travel restrictions to the island. Whilst a small number of infringement notices were issued, most people intercepted or spoken to complied with the restrictions.”
