A POLICE dog stabbed in Brisbane yesterday morning while tracking two men who allegedly fled from a vehicle is expected to make a full recovery.

PD Kaos is undergoing a second round of surgery this afternoon.

He was stabbed in the incident at Gordon Park in Brisbane’s north about 1.30am yesterday, when police intercepted a suspect vehicle.

Two men allegedly fled the vehicle and police arrested three other people at the scene.

Police Dog Kaos and his handler tracked the fugitives, locating them about 15 minutes later.

During the arrest the police dog received a large stab wound to the chest.

The police dog handler rendered first aid before PD Kaos was transported to a vet surgery where he was operated on.

Senior Sergeant Sean Baxendell said today the german shepherd was lively and could be back on the beat in three weeks.

“I’ve just come from Kaos. He’s very lively — I’ve got a lot of hair on my pants to show that,” he said.

The second bout of surgery was to clean the wound.

A “constant vigil” has remained at the Stafford Heights vet surgery where PD Kaos was operated on.

The vigil is made up of police dog handlers, some of whom have not left the dog’s side.

Other officers had been coming and going, Sen-Sgt Baxendall said.

“Earlier this morning he’s been quite lively with his family,” he said.

“A lot of handlers are remaining (at the surgery).”

In a statement on Sunday evening, police confirmed the surgery had been a success and that the dog was “recovering nicely.”

“He is up and about, however, he remains in a serious condition,” the statement said.

Senior-Sergeant Sean Baxendell earlier said the dog’s handler was distraught following the incident.

“Police Dog Kaos has been with the handler since he was a pup. Any incident involving a police dog is very distressing for everyone, especially the handler,” he said.

PD Kaos is a seven-year-old general purpose police dog assigned to the Brisbane Region.

A 21-year-old Milton man and a 24-year-old Enoggera man have both been charged with one count each of serious animal cruelty, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault police and obstruct police.

They were both denied bail and are expected to appear at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court today.

A 25-year-old Logan Village woman, 22-year-old Wynnum man, and 29-year-old Manly West woman have all been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

All three are expected at appear at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on February 17.
