Sixteen carnival operators charged over border breach

Sixteen carnival operators have been fined a collective $64,000 after allegedly failing to comply with border directions to enter Queensland after being in Victoria.

Police will allege the carnival operators used a freight declaration pass to enter through the Goondiwindi checkpoint on October 5.

The group were identified at Mackay Showgrounds on October 7 after further investigations showed they did not meet strict conditions of entry.

All members of the group returned a negative COVID-19 test result.

The 16 show support staff declared that they would travel to Rockhampton Showgrounds to deliver rides, but police allege the group planned to stay on at various Queensland locations.

The group are on their way to cross the Queensland and New South Wales border.

Police charged all members, who live in Victoria, $4,003 each for failing to comply with the COVID-19 Border Direction.
