A missing meteorite has been brought back to base after a five year mystery that may have finally been brought to a close.

A hefty 11 kilogram meteorite, estimated to be worth several thousands of dollars, disappeared without a trace from the Atherton Crystal Caves museum and shop over five years ago.

The out-of-this-world rock had only been on display for two weeks when it was stolen from its display cabinet in June 2015, with police alleging two men broke into the store.

But on Saturday, November 7, more than five years after the meteorite’s disappearance, Cairns detectives searched a Mooroobool property when they located the giant, and very recognisable rock.

A man has since been charged with one count of receiving tainted property and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on November 25.

The rock has been returned to its over-the-moon owners, and is due to go back on display at the Atherton museum shortly.
