NRL star Michael Gordon to plead guilty to possessing cocaine

A lawyer for Michael Gordon says the former Titans player will plead guilty to possessing cocaine following his arrest on drug charges.

Former NRL star Michael Gordon was a “small fish” inadvertently caught up in a police investigation into a major drug trafficking network, his lawyer has said.

Gordon, 37, was one of seven people arrested last month following a six-month police probe into a drug network operating on the Gold Coast and northern NSW.

He was charged with two counts of possessing prohibited drugs and two counts of supply.

Gordon was not present for a brief appearance at Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday, but his lawyer Michael McMillan said he had been instructed to enter guilty pleas to counts of possessing cocaine and MDMA.

He is awaiting further information from police before making a decision on how to proceed with the drug supply charges, which relate to “small quantities” of cocaine and MDMA.

Outside court, Mr McMillan said Gordon, who has been stood down from his coaching role at the Gold Coast Titans, was “very remorseful” for his actions, but was no drug dealer.

“He was a little fish caught up when they were looking for much bigger fish,” he said.

“He truly is a man of character and this has been an awful time for him and his family.

“He’s been trying to keep his family and kids out of harm’s way.”

He said there was still some confusion over the drug supply charges and he had asked police for more detail of the case against Gordon.

“We’re after further detail as to why it would qualify as supply,” he said.

The case will return to court on February 15 next year.
