A 28-year-man shot by police as he allegedly tried to carjack a vehicle in Durack yesterday afternoon is still in hospital.

A Metro South spokeswoman said the man, who was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, was still in a stable condition as of Saturday morning.

He and a 26-year-old alleged accomplice are yet to be charged, according to a Queensland Police spokesman.

The 28-year-old man who allegedly tried fleeing arrest by hijacking a neighbouring car this afternoon.

The man was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a gunshot wound to his buttocks.

The incident unfolded at 12.20pm at the intersection of Inala Avenue and Blunder Road, Durack.

Detective Acting Inspector Michael Manago said the man and another 26-year-old man were allegedly driving a stolen red Hyundai which had been involved in a string of alleged offences across Brisbane’s Western suburbs and in the Goodna area.

The Hyundai was bearing the plates which police understand didn’t belong to the vehicle originally.

Police were trying to arrest the two men when one allegedly attempted to flee by allegedly carjacking another car stopped beside them at a red light, terrifying a 58-year-old man behind the wheel.

“(Police will allege) The male person who entered that blue Commodore was armed with a knife and during the course of entering the other vehicle has threatened the driver,” Mr Manago said.

“From there, a Police taser and firearm were deployed almost instantaneously,” he said.

The 26-year-old man was arrested and taken to the Richlands watch house, while the injured 28-year-old is expected to make a full recovery after being taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

A male police officer is understood to have suffered minor injuries during the ordeal.

The pair are expected to be charged with a string of offences in due course, he said.

Ethical Standards are investigating the incident to ensure the use of firearms was appropriate.

Witness Aiden Brian, the Drive In Express Service manager, said the carjacking attempt happened while Police were trying to arrest the men.

“Basically, I heard what I thought to be a crash, turned out to be gunshots,” Mr Brian said.

“Police were there before I got there,” he said.

“The cops had tasered him and he’d had a shock.”

Officers reportedly held the 28-year-old injured man to the ground for 20 minutes while they dealt with the situation.

Mr Brian said the 58-year-old driver of the blue Commodore had been heavily shaken up by the incident.

“The guy he (allegedly) tried to hijack, he was sitting next to the Islamic college for an hour, he was that shaky,” he said.
