Man charged with murder after woman’s body found in Nambour street

A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead on a Sunshine Coast street in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police say the woman suffered significant head and chest injuries.

A 34-year-old Burnside man has been charged with the murder of a 31-year-old Buddina woman on the Sunshine Coast.

He is expected to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on August 24.

A crime scene was established at the Petrie Creek Bridge, near the Nambour RSL carpark after the woman was found dead by police early Saturday.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Nambour CBD particularly Currie Street on the bridge, near the Nambour RSL who observed any suspicious behaviour from 12.30-2am Saturday to contact police.

Police had been called to Matthew St, Nambour, at 1.30am to reports a woman had been seriously assaulted. She was found dead.

Sunshine Coast District Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen said the woman was located “lying” on the roadside of Matthew St, Nambour with “significant” chest and head injuries.

He said first responders arrived to an “abhorrent” scene.

“First responders engaged in CPR but her injuries were horrific,” Det Insp Drinnen said.

“It’s really abhorrent violence towards women, well anyone.

“Police worked on her for a short time, before paramedics took over, but she was pronounced dead.”

Det Insp Drinnen also said a number of weapons were found in the area, but for “operational reasons” police could not disclose further details about those items at this time.

He said police had received triple-0 calls about an alleged altercation between a man and woman prior to 1.30am.

“We believe they are known to each other but as to how that acquaintance goes, it is too early to know,” he said.

“At this stage of our direction of investigation has taken, we believe there is only one person involved.

“We will allege that he is certainly a suspect.”

This morning on Matthew St, a white sheet can be seen over what appears to be a body, and a police marquee set up above it.
