A man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly going armed with a compound bow to target pedestrians and drivers in a terrifying rampage in Ipswich that ended after he shot a teen at a local Aldi and was crash tackled to the ground by heroic bystanders.
Benjamin Bourke, a 25-year-old Bundamba man, has since been charged with attempted murder, torture and going armed so as to cause fear.
Police Inspector Heath McQueen said Bourke left the Booval train station at South Station Road where he fired at an unsuspecting jogger.
“It is believed a witness has identified that male person discharge an arrow at a female jogger who was passing by,” Inspector McQueen said.
“He has then continued on to a vehicle and it is believed the male person may have discharged that bow at a vehicle en route while he was heading towards Aldi supermarket.”
Bystanders tackled Bourke who was wearing a black hoodie and a mask and held him until police arrived.
Bourke then allegedly fired a bow at the front doors the supermarket before entering the store.
He then walked towards the back of the store and fired at the 15-year-old girl. She was treated by paramedics for hand and abdominal injuries and was taken in a stable condition to Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Police say they believe the attack was random.
Bourke will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court today, September 23.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw Bourke, who have CCTV or dashcam footage or with any information to come forward.
