Man allegedly stabbed as out-of-control party erupts in wild brawl

A gatecrashed house party in Ipswich has turned into a wild melee involving more than 20 people, who used bricks, palings and glass bottles to attack each other. Police are investigating after a man was allegedly stabbed in the fight.

A man was allegedly stabbed during a fight involving more than 20 people in Ipswich overnight.

Police were called to Thornton St, Raceview, just after 12.30am after reports of a wounding incident when a party turned violent.

The fight occurred out the front of a house between two groups.

Police are unsure whether the groups knew each other.

Neighbours reported hearing one of the gatecrashers involved in the melee shout “stab him, kill him,” repeatedly as the street filled with dozens of teens and young adults.

The group, who claim to not know the carload of people who appeared at the Raceview home, had been partying downstairs before they say a group of unknown men hurled glass bottles at them.

“We just came to a house party, just drinking and good vibes, then a car pulled up with a few boys but we didn’t know them,” partygoer Lopa Suamili said, who returned to the scene of the bloodied brawl on Sunday.

“As soon as I seen (sic) the bottles smashing, I knew they wanted to start a fight or something. They started getting lippy and saying, ‘aye aye aye let’s have a go,’ then everyone was just punching on from their own corners,” he said.

Mr Suamili was one of four men who spoke with The Courier-Mail about the fight.

According to the group, one of their friends, Jason Talafa, had been stabbed in the hand with a knife during the fight.

“I didn’t even know there was (sic) weapons involved, but as soon as I seen (sic) the knife, I wasn’t going to run from it,” said Pita Suamili, whose shirt was yesterday still splattered in his friend’s blood.

“When I saw my mate on the ground I got more angry. We ran over and then we had a good old-fashioned boxing match.”

According to the woman who lives at the home, who was hosting a party for her 17-year-old granddaughter, the fight broke out between the two groups over an accusation someone was sleeping with their little sister.

“Some random people came off the street and started yelling ‘you were with my little sister,’ or ‘you slept with my little sister,’ or something. But these guys were like, ‘I don’t even know who you are,” said Sue, who would not provide her surname.

“Somebody up against the fence was getting stabbed … People were throwing bricks and pulling the palings off the fence. A couple of girls got hit in the head by flying bottles … It just went absolutely crazy.”

Witnesses reported on Facebook that they heard screaming and glass smashing late last night before emergency services arrived.

One local said the street was closed at 1am when they came home.

This morning, residents are reporting a large police presence in Thornton St.

“All I can see is forensics dusting for fingerprints and a bunch of them little yellow number cards near the kerb and front lawn of some house down there, I really hope everyone is OK,” Kerrie Slattery wrote on the Facebook page Raceview Residents Community News & Chat.

“I live in Dulcie Street and got home and saw all these cop cars but yeah spoke to my neighbours and they said it was pretty loud,” Christiana Donges said.

Paramedics, including critical care crew, attended and took the 24-year-old man to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition. It’s believed his injuries were cuts on his hand.

A female patient was assessed at the scene by paramedics for a minor foot injury but did not require transport to hospital.

Police cordoned off part of Thornton St as they investigated the incident.

No one has been arrested.
