A MAN has been charged after he allegedly detained a woman against her will and set fire to a unit in Hervey Bay.

Emergency services were called to Hunter St, Pialba, following reports a unit was on fire about 9.10pm on Friday.

Police will allege an incident unfolded prior to the unit fire, in which a woman in her 60s was deprived of her liberty and assaulted.

The woman escaped and went directly to police.

Police cannot confirm if the man and woman were known to each other.

The single-storey unit was completely destroyed by the blaze.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the unit was well involved by the time they arrived and surrounding units were not impacted by the fire.
