A teen’s high speed joyride through Brisbane in a stolen car has left a magistrate bewildered that it didn’t cause death or injury.

Kelton Dallas James Fuller, 18, on Saturday pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a car and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

The Brisbane Magistrates Court heard Fuller was spotted driving a stolen BMW X1 at Seventeen Mile Rocks just before 11pm on Friday.

As Fuller was driving along Seventeen Mile Rocks Rd he crossed onto the wrong side and headed towards a blind corner at 90 km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Polair began tracking the car along Ipswich Road before it entered the airport precinct.

The car hit the Gateway Motorway northbound travelling up to 170km/hr while weaving between heavy traffic.

The joyride eventually ended when the car ran out of petrol in Yugar near Samford.

The court heard Fuller and a female exited the vehicle which rolled down an embankment causing extensive damage. They were immediately arrested.

Police prosecutor Henri Rantala said the car had been stolen from Ormeau on August 24.

“The defendant’s conduct has placed road users at a significant risk given that it occurred at 10.50pm on a Friday night,” he said.

Fuller’s lawyer Lauren Hanna said she was instructed her client had been given the car by a friend and was driving a relative home.

“He then saw Polair and panicked and made very stupid decisions and … regrets everything that happened,” she said.

She said Fuller had been living on the streets since he was 15 and had a limited education.

Fuller told Magistrate Steve Courtney that he did not hold a driver’s licence.

“It just amazes me that you didn’t at some point lose control of this motor vehicle and cause injury or death to someone else,” he said.

Mr Courtney said Fuller’s youth and lack of criminal history was “saving (him) from actual imprisonment”.

He sentenced him to 18 months probation and 120 hours community service.

Fuller was disqualified from driving for a year.
