Is this man Qld’s loneliest killer? Brave cell-mate companion needed

A sadistic killer who severed and then kept his flatmate’s penis as a souvenir and who bit off a piece of a prison warden’s ear claims he is Queensland’s loneliest prisoner and is desperate for someone to share his cell.

A sadistic killer who severed and then kept his flatmate’s penis as a souvenir and who bit off the top of a prison warden’s ear, is pleading to be allowed a cell-mate claiming he is Queensland’s loneliest prisoner and solitary confinement is a breach of his human rights.

But prison authorities argue Michael Stephen Owen-D’Arcy, 40, needs to be kept away from other prisoners and jail staff because he has a high risk of killing or seriously injuring other prisoners or persons.

D’Arcy, who lives in B wing of the maximum security unit at Brisbane Correctional Centre at Wacol, has applied to Brisbane Supreme Court to force Queensland Corrective Services to give him a cell buddy, and he promises he wont hurt them.

He argues he has never been violent towards other prisoners, just to jail staff and that denying him a cell-mate is cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment.

D’Arcy is serving life for butchering his flatmate David John Easton, a nurse, by stabbing him 41 times with a bayonet and three other knives at their Inala home in 2007 then slicing off his penis and testicles.

Easton’s testicles were found in the kitchen sink and his penis was found wrapped in cling film and placed inside a salt container.

After the “ferocious and sustained attack” on Easton, D’Arcy took photos of Easton’s body posing with a children’s book, Pussy Cat Pussy Cat, on his chest and bandaids over his eyes with eyes drawn on them in whiteboard marker.

While in prison in 2013 he bit off the top of a prison guards ear and in 2011 he head butted a prison officer in the face before punching him multiple times in the face and head.

He also tried to kill a guard using a shiv fashioned from paddle pop sticks and a razor blade to slice the guard four times in his throat and face.

Now when he is allowed out of his cell in the maximum security unit he wears handcuffs, leg irons and a body-belt and can be accompanied by up to three prison officers.

He is only allowed out of his cell for two hours a day with limited access to fresh air and natural light and has asked to be allowed to use a chin-up bar for exercise in the yard, court documents state.

He has not been allowed to associate with another prisoner since January 29, 2013, court documents state.

He keeps himself occupied by learning to speak Danish and completing complex maths equations and physics problems.

He wants to be allowed a cell-mate because it will help him to prepare for his release on parole for which he is eligible in August 2025.

To be considered for parole he first must be released from the maximum security unit and into the general prison population, and to do that he must show he can share a cell.

The Queensland Human Rights Commission intervened in the case late on Friday.

D’Arcy’s case will be heard in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday.
