A woman returning home from her night shift could only watch on in horror as her house exploded in flames with her partner nowhere to be found.
Firefighters had responded to the blaze that ripped through the two-storey Woodridge home at 12.30am yesterday, after neighbours reported multiple explosions.
Man confirmed dead after fierce fire at Woodridge home overnight
It took hours after the blaze had been extinguished for emergency service personnel to search the property and deliver the terrible news that father-of-two Michael Luck had died in the house.
Mr Luck’s partner, Agnieszka, 56, had just returned home from working a night shift to discover her house on fire.
Firefighters at the scene took five hours to extinguish the blaze.
Forensics and emergency service personnel yesterday remained at the scene for over 12 hours, with the cause of the blaze unconfirmed.
Police said a body was found late yester afternoon during a search of the property.
The fire had caused extensive damage to the house, with the upper level and roof collapsing.
Neighbour Sufyaan Mohamoud said the fire was shocking.
“It sounded like gunshots – something kept exploding the whole night,” he said.
“I heard sirens at the start and then I was like ‘whoa’, I thought it was fireworks.
“Then I came outside and there was a full explosion and the house just lights up.
“You could just feel the heat … it was shocking.
“They’re a nice family.”
Neighbour Dearne James, who lives next door to the house in Nyanza St, said she heard a commotion just after midnight.
She said she looked out the window to see a glow from the house.
Logan House Fire Support Network’s Louie Naumovski said the house collapsed on itself and the roof caved in, making it difficult to look for a body during the investigation.
Mr Luck was missing, feared dead, for several hours yesterday as family remained out the front of the home as firefighters waited for the building to cool before searching the property.
Firefighters from Wishart, Capalaba and Logan attended the blaze.
Mr Luck’s death is not the first from a house fire in Logan this year – a 68-year-old woman died when a fire gutted her home in Synthey St, Kingston, in March.
It comes just a month after the ninth anniversary of Australia’s worst house fire in the same region where eight children and three adults died when a fire tore through their home at Slacks Creek in 2011.
