Boy, 16, stabbed in Queen St mall

A 16-year-old boy has suffered a collapsed lung and will undergo surgery after being stabbed in Brisbane’s Queen St Mall overnight. Blood could still be seen on the ground and shop walls this morning. A second assault in the mall happened just hours later.

A 16-year-old boy has suffered a collapsed lung after being stabbed in Brisbane’s CBD overnight.

Officers responded to a disturbance between the boy and three other people on Queen St Mall about 10.30pm Friday.

The boy was in an argument with the men before he was assaulted and stabbed, police said.

Police said the boy was stabbed at the corner of Albert and Queen streets and was treated by paramedics near the casino after he managed to walk there.

It’s understood the boy was punched and fell to the ground before he stood up again.

He was then stabbed, fell over into the wall of Michael Hill jewellery store and was then stabbed again.

It’s unclear what triggered the incident. Police have spoken to witnesses but it’s unclear if they have spoken to the boy as he will undergo surgery.

“Upon arrival police located the boy who had been punched and then sustained puncture wounds to his torso and back,” police said in a statement.

“He was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment to his injuries, where he remains.

“A crime scene was declared, and investigations are ongoing.”

The injured boy, a Pacific Islander, was in a stable condition and his injuries include a collapsed lung. Paramedics had assessed him for three puncture wounds at the scene of the stabbing.

Police last night said the suspects were of African descent.

Officers were this morning investigating the roof of the upstairs McDonald’s, looking for any items related to the incident that might’ve been discarded.

It’s understood the group fled on Albert St towards King George Square, with police and QFES searching along nearby rooftops for a discarded item.

Drops of blood were still visible on the ground and nearby wall of Michael Hill Jewellery.

Senior Sergeant Mark Dwyer said a large disturbance broke out in the mall in which a male sustained several small puncture wounds.

“There are four suspects of Sudanese descent,” he said last night.

Senior Sergeant Dwyer said nobody has been arrested or charged but police are confident they will track their movements.

He said it is believed the involved parties were not known to each other.

Police do not believe the incident is linked to any previous assaults at this stage.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area is urged to contact police.

Just hours after the Queen St stabbing, police were called to another alleged assault in the mall although the two attacks were not believed to be related.

The second incident happened just before 2am and resulted in two teenagers being taken to the Mater Adults Hospital in stable conditions.

The assaults come just days after one of Queensland’s most senior detectives said he’s had enough of rising knife crime and has called on social media influencers to use their power for good instead of for their own gain in a bid to stop the deadly scourge.
