Four arrested on 140 charges tied to car sale fraud scheme

Police have charged four people over an alleged car rebirthing scheme operating between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, with a number of stolen and written off cars sold to unsuspecting buyers.

FOUR PEOPLE have been charged with more than 140 offences in relation to a fraud car sales operation, resulting in a number stolen vehicles being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

The arrests comes as a result of Operation Sierra Tusk, with officers from the Upper Mount Gravatt Criminal Investigation Branch heading the operation targeting fraudulent sales of vehicles across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.

Police allege the group of four purchased a number written off vehicles, altered their vehicle identification (VIN) numbers and resold them with altered documents declaring them undamaged to unaware third-party buyers.

It’s also alleged the group stole a number a number of roadside and test drive vehicles from dealerships that were also used in the scheme.

Two men from Southport, 22 and 20, a 23-year-old Logan man and a 19-year-old Logan woman have each been charged with 147 offences including fraud, forgery, uttering, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The men and woman are due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, July 17.
