Emaciated dogs surrendered after condition rapidly deteriorates

After community complaints to the RSPCA, a father has surrendered his badly emaciated dog.

Dogs are our new weapon against COVID-19

The RSPCA seized a dog from a Beaudesert property after it was found emaciated with its ribs, spine and hips visible.

The dog’s owner, Anthony Bony, 46, appeared before the Beaudesert Magistrates Court yesterday after a RSPCA Inspector received complaints of two emaciated dogs in 2019.

On 27 September 2019, the Inspector found two dogs at the property, Sasha and Marley.

Mr Bony told the Inspector that Sasha had cancer and had rapidly lost weight within the last two weeks.

Marley was found in reasonable body condition but was obviously itchy, while Sasha was very emaciated with all ribs, hips and spine visible.

Sasha was surrendered and found to have a heart murmur, possibly exacerbated by anaemia, bilateral cataract formation, dental disease requiring extraction and

an overshot jaw, she was euthanised on 3 October 2019.

Mr Bony pleaded guilty to one count of failure to provide appropriate treatment for a disease or injury contributing to the dog being emaciated.

Magistrate Kilner noted the “excruciating circumstances” that Mr Bony was the sole carer of four children, two with learning disabilities and the children had a personal attachment to the dog, which put him in a difficult situation in terms of surrendering the dog.

Bony was fined $500 and released upon entering a $1000 recognisance and

ordered to be of good behaviour for a period of 1 year as per section 31 of the Penalties and Sentence Act 1992.

He had vet and boarding costs of $998.76, cost of complaint and summons of $101.80 and Legal Professional Costs of $550, all of which were referred to SPER.

He was ordered a Prohibition order for a period of two years excluding Marley and his pet birds and fish.
