One person has been taken to hospital following a deadly chemical spill at the Port of Brisbane.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman could not comment on the type of injury paramedics responded to, however said the patient was in a stable condition when they were taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Specialist firefighters wearing hazmat suits and breathing apparatus are on scene at Patrick’s Wharf at the Port of Brisbane and an exclusion zone has been established after sodium cyanide spilled from two shipping containers earlier this morning.
According to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman, scientific crews and specialist QFES workers trained in the removal of dangerous substances are at the scene.
The highly-toxic chemical can interfere with the body’s ability to process oxygen and exposure to the chemical can be rapidly fatal.
Curlew St and Peregrine Dr have been included as part of the exclusion zone, which extends 200 metres throughout the area.
Two 20-foot shipping containers carrying the poisonous substance were damaged this morning, with the chemical, understood to be in granular form, spilling onto the docked cargo ship.
