Cop seriously assaulted after allegedly confronting group drinking in park

A police officer has been left with a serious injury to her face after a 24-year-old woman allegedly attacked her on Sunday night. The incident was reportedly sparked after the officer confronted a group of people drinking in a family park.

Cops describe police assault as disgusting

The woman accused of repeatedly striking a 33-year-old senior constable in the face has been let out on bail.

Elora Lesley Thorpe, 24, had her matter mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday morning after police alleged she struck a female police officer in the nose up to six times.

Police alleged the officer approached a group of people reportedly drinking at a South Bank park on Sunday night but was left with a bleeding and bruised nose after the alleged attack.

According to police, when the officer questioned the group, one woman became violent before she is alleged to have punched the female officer several times in the face.

Initial investigations suggested the officer had sustained a broken nose as a result, however further assessment at hospital deemed her nose was not broken and did not require surgery.

Two women, including Thorpe, were arrested and taken into police custody.

Thorpe’s duty lawyer, from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, said Thorpe had no recollection of the incident.

Thorpe appeared via video link from the Brisbane Watchhouse on Monday morning and was released on bail.

Her next appearance is scheduled for December 16.

Thorpe’s co-accused, 24-year-old Shania Margaret Fuller, was also charged with one count of serious assault of police and one count of serious assault of police causing bodily harm.

Fuller appeared via videolink from the Brisbane Watchhouse on Monday afternoon.

As part of the bail conditions for both women, they are unable to communicate with each other and must stay away from the South Bank parklands precinct.

Both women are due to face court next month.

The women were arrested on Sunday night with the assistance of additional police nearby, while the injured officer was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment to facial injuries including a laceration, swelling and bruising to her nose, head, eye and cheek.
